What should I wear to my portrait photography session?

Choosing what to wear for a photo shoot can be a bit daunting. However, finding the perfect outfits can be a lot easier with a few tips from your photographer.

Whatever you decide to wear, bring a minimum of 4 to 5 outfits. The session will last approximately 2 hours, which gives you plenty of time to try 5 and perhaps a few more. If you still can't decide what to wear after reading the following tips, you can bring a suitcase full of clothes and ask for help at your photography session.

Showing your shape

Fitted clothing on your bodice or top half that shows your shape and curves works best for all body types. Avoid loose fitting shirts such as bat-wing sleeves. If you are worried about your body shape, don't be. You will be guided through the portrait session. The way you sit and stand will flatter your shape. Photography is only part of what it takes to be a portrait photographer, a large part is knowing how to flatter all body types using posing techniques.

Textures

Think about different material textures. Lace, chiffon, bead-work and embroidery can bring a richness to your portraits. Avoid bold prints and patterns as they can be a distracting element in the photo. It is your time to shine, your clothing should compliment you, not steal the show.

Necklines

Consider different necklines. Different necklines will evoke different moods. Think about how you would like to be seen. If your portraits are for business, you may want to consider a square or high neckline. If you want to be a little bit sexy, perhaps an off the shoulder neckline is your answer.

Colours

Keep the colours simple and clean. The focus should be on you, not your clothes. Solid colours, and muted prints work very well to keep the focus on the subject in the portrait without distraction. Logos or text on clothing is also a distraction and should be avoided.

A chance to dress up

If you are always wearing jeans, you may want all of your portraits to show who you are from day to day. However, you may want to use your portrait session as an opportunity to try on dresses that you don't often get a chance to wear. We don't all have the opportunity to put on a ball gown here in Adelaide, but a photo shoot is the perfect opportunity to dress up and have a bit of fun with what you wear.

Be Yourself

It is fun to dress up, it is also an opportunity to show who you really are at this moment in time, so you can save the memory for yourself or a loved one. Bring one of your go-to outfits. One that you would choose if you were going out with friends and makes you feel fabulous and reflects who you really are. That might be jeans and a favourite t-shirt or a dress that you are comfortable in.

P.S. There is a limited studio wardrobe too, so if there is something in there that you would like to try for fun, you are most welcome. Most of all, don't stress, what ever you have, we can make it work!
